掌の平棗 flat natsume in the palm

 Kamakura



掌で包みたい、愛でたいモノ。

河原で拾ったきれいな石、

ビンテージでもきちんと動く腕時計、

風合いのいい湯呑、

細工の確かな工芸品…

無性にそんなものが欲しくなった。

買ったままのパックや缶のまま冷蔵庫から出し入れしていた抹茶を

棗に入れることにしてみた。

その棗、せっかく住んでいるのだから鎌倉彫のものを求めてみた。

何店か老舗のお店を巡ってみた。

堆朱のそれらは作り手のもとを離れ

店の棚で持ち主を待っている。

これから使われ磨かれ艶を得ていくのだろう。

が、何故か私に飛び込んでこない。

何日も職人の下で精魂込められたものゆえに、

私のところには来たがっていないのだろう。

と、前からなんとなく外のウインドウを除くだけで

通り過ぎていた踏切脇の骨董古書店が気になり入ってみる。

雑多すぎて入ろうと思わなかったが、

なにか探す目的があると案外気にならなくなり、

じつは物が多すぎて整理陳列に手が回ってないだけのことだったとわかる。

老婦人の店主に尋ねると、奥の列の足元に茶道具はまとめてあるとのこと。

確かに古い桐箱が変色して形を失った紙袋に無造作に積み上げられている。

勝手にまさぐるわけにもいかないので暫く待つと、

前の客にいわれを話しながら絵を包んで送り出した店主が詫びながらやってきた。

「お茶道具は最近人気無くてねぇ。お店になかなか出さなくて…」

20センチ四方ほどの桐箱を一つづつちらっと開けて、棗だけをこちらに渡してくる。

「これは輪島塗だから違うけど、見るだけでも。こっちのは箱に利休好みと書いてあるけど…」

なかなか鎌倉彫はないようだが、「平棗だけど…」

そう言って渡された箱はこれまでのに比べ断然箱が古い。

おそらく当初は別な色だったであろうカラカラになった布を開くと

梅を彫った扁平の棗が出てきた。

求めていたイメージとはズレが大きいが、手のひらに乗せるとこの形も案外悪くない。

薄茶を入れる容器というのが本来の性質なのに

なにか掌で弄びたくなるサイズ、質感。

そして何より蓋のはまり具合がとても心地良い。

キツくなく逆にパカパカしない、吸い込まれるような合わせ。

迷いはなかった。

家に持ち帰るといつ生まれたものかは知ることはできないが、

箱から推測して長年のお勤めご苦労さま、といいながら柔らかな布できれいにしてあげた。

棚にしまうと差し込む夕日を浴びて蓋の曲面が照りを見せる。

もう一度取り出すと、いつの間にか両手で包んでいた。
