【short story collection vol,1】Kamakura Thousand Tales ~ Chimi Myou Ryou rampant

1. Horseshoe dream

Yoritomo chose this place aiming for impregnability by perfect feng shui.As the map shows, the land where the shogunate was established was surrounded by mountains on three sides. In order to invade, if you control "Kobukuro" in the northwest, "Asahina" in the northeast, "Nagoe" in the east, and "Hase" in the west, then you can only attack from the sea. This is perfect feng shui. Suzaku to the south (Yuigahama sea), white tiger to the west (Hase no Oka), It has all the Seiryu (namerigawa river) in the east. This impregnable figure can be compared to a horseshoe. In this horseshoe, the food, clothing and shelter necessary for the capital developed, To the temples and shrines that were opened one after another after the opening and invited first-class monks. A lot of monks visit the master and use the Wakaejima boat dock in Zaimokuza beach. I came here for training. The richly colored temples and shrines of the time were, so to speak, a lively place for international students. It was full of foreign languages and was as lively as today's Komachi street. I guess it will be.On a warm winter day, go outside with a cup of coffee. The deep part of the horseshoe that can be seen from the balcony, A flock of white doves circles over Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. The series of irrevers gradually faded from sight, Delusions about a monk from a thousand years ago have come and gone.

Monk Myohkun came to Kamakura from the port of Song over 20 days. He came to Japan to visit the founder of Kenchoji Temple, Doryu Rankei. On the way, he encountered severe weather many times and finally set foot in Kamakura. He packed his personal belongings in one bag and held it under his arm and hit the gate. When he walk on the floor that is still fresh but has been thoroughly wiped and polished, he feel tense. He polished this floor day after day. He carried a bowl and went from house to house with begging. Reciting the Buddha's teachings, facing the gap with his own consciousness many times, Thinking feverishly about unseen truths, He's disgusted with his incomplete self, One day, he couldn't even raise his gaze above the hat. He continued walking while chanting sutras while drooping his head. At some point, the gravel road turned to sand. When he looked up for the first time in several hours, it was Yuigahama Beach where the sunset was reflected. It was the first time he had seen the sea since the day he set foot in Kamakura. A straight line from the sun to the ocean, an orange road was growing towards him.It is the delicate Tathagata that was held out as if to welcome. It felt like an arm.At that moment, Myohkun's consciousness ascended like evaporating water.

Enlightenment has arrived.

All the frustration, obsessions, frustration, and jealousy up until now sublimated into nothingness. It exists from head to foot, but this is a temporary form. The minute roots compose the body, compose the surroundings, compose the universe. Karisome(momentary appearance) is destined to continue to have conflicts,The root is free. Beyond the stars in the night sky,To the warm hands of my grandmother that day, To despair in yesterday's bed, we can reach anywhere.and to the teachings of Buddha. When he opened her eyes, the sun was about to set over Inamuragasaki.

The sun that can be seen from the balcony is approaching hill of Hase.17:00 in December is really chilly. With a pot of cyclamen in the sun and a cup of coffee,I went back to my room.Who was the delusional monk?

2.Overlooking Paradise

Unexpectedly lost, I ended up wandering in the woods. These days, if I walk a little bit, I should look a private house, but if I walk on this gravel road from a while ago, I'll just continue to undulate through the same scenery. The slope on the side of the road is not very high, but since it is a vertical rock, I don't feel like climbing it and looking over it. Well, it's still 1:00 pm, so I'm not in a hurry.

By the way, do I have a smartphone? The location was easily found by GPS, but this rocky mountain is not shown on the aeronautical chart and is a thick green forest. When I switch to the contour screen, it seems to be a doughnut-shaped topography like the outer rim of a volcano. It's less than a few hundred meters around, so it feels like it was made by humans rather than natural terrain. This mountain is isolated from the hiking trails that crisscross the Kamakura mountains. Before I knew it, I wasn't lost, but I was walking along the outer rim of Mt. The slope was steep and rocky all along. It's like an impregnable castle wall.

After leaving the forest without difficulty and arriving at my house, I projected today's location on the large screen of my desktop PC. When I looked all over with the largest magnified screen provided by Google Maps, I found a straight line like the roof of a house in a slight gap between the evergreen trees. The land surrounded by the somma is probably about 330 square yards. If a small house is surrounded by tall trees, it will probably look like a forest like that aerial photograph. I don't have a hobby of obsessing over other people's dwellings, but if there's a house in that rock that looks like a castle wall, and there's no gate after going around it, I wonder what kind of land it is and what that straight line is. I couldn't help it. How to get over that rock? Drones are also impossible because of the trees. There must be a trail leading into it somewhere. Switching the aeronautical chart again to the map revealed a narrow channel running into the forest. Come to think of it, when I walked today, I felt like I crossed over, but I think I just jumped over it, not enough to hinder my walking. I had no other clues, so I decided to go check it out tomorrow and turned off my PC.

                                                           *

The stream seems to continue from Mt. Kinubari, but the amount of water is very small. I think it's probably a path for rainwater. The important thing is how the flow flows into the somma. If I follow yesterday's route, there is certainly that flow. Moreover, it flows into a hand-dug hole different from the one pierced by time. Furthermore, I didn't notice it at all, but there seems to be a cave covered with thick ivy beside it. Putting on the work gloves I brought and pulling the ivy away, cave was so tall that a person could stand, and it was so deep that I couldn't see the back. There are a lot of viper around here, so I set my smartphone to flashlight mode and illuminate it while being careful. As expected. After all, this castle wall is a castle wall. There is a place in the back of the cave that seems to have been covered with wood. It must be the entrance to the castle walls. However, it is impossible to capture this guard alone. The person who is coming now is Mr. Hara, who recently retired. Mr. Hara should be interested in such mysteries. I was lucky enough to be at home. Observe my surroundings again until he arrive. The dark tower seems to be a suitable habitat for wild animals, and there are some recent droppings here and there, but humans don't seem to have noticed, and there are no artificial objects other than the blocked wood.

About 30 minutes later, Mr. Hara arrived with a large flashlight and a sickle.

"Well, I live quite close, but I didn't notice this cave."

"That's right, it was just like a wall of ivy."

"But I thought this place was just a hill, but it looks like a castle wall. I'm curious about the inside, so let's get started."

The wood was easily removed. However, there is a pile of large stones piled up there. We can see inside through the gap, but what we can see is tall weeds.

"Well, We have to move them one by one."

We chose a thicker piece of wood from earlier, and when we broke down the top stone with two people, we ware able to create a space where we could crawl over.

 3 Uguisudani Vichyssoise

It is better to enter the forest than to look at it.Humidity and insects can be annoying, so try to keep it as light as possible choose a sunny day to go.Because it continues to create shade even after the sun rises, it's cool.Because trees respire instead of photosynthesizing, it emits a unique fragrance of its own ingredients and fills the space. The overwhelming siege network instinctively acts as a defense, looking up at the sky to find an escape. Finding the sky in the gaps between the branches and leaves that are strongly stretched, first of all, calm down. As I gradually become accustomed to the space, I will notice the details. The morning dew clinging to the moss growing on the old stock, with tall branches as if to care about me Little birds resting around. To the light that shines through from the sky without any obstruction floated water vapor, a winged insect hovering in front of me like a guide in the forest. It is right to turn myself into a wild animal there. I just want life.Breathing in the fresh air of the morning, full of fragrance It circulates throughout the body, stepping on fallen leaves and walking away to promote blood flow. I will eventually find food.  From now on, I will refrain from gathering in the forest and killing for the time being. I want to leave it to the grace of human wisdom.

Well delusional.  The imaginary table is located on the site of Toshoji Temple, east of Hachimangu Shrine. This temple, which was once counted as one of the Kanto ten temples, established by Yoshisada Nitta as the place where the Kamakura Shogunate ended. After 800 people killed themselves, the land was abandoned, and later turned into an orchard full of peach trees, and eventually abandoned.  It is the trace of a soldier's dream. This dream field will be maintained, and a decaying Western-style building adjacent to the field. Thoroughly polishing it completely transforms it into a residence and cuisine (kitchen) for a chef returning from Avignon in the south of France.White gravel was spread only on the ground where people walked, and a large 10m long table was placed on it to create a faint shade of trees to avoid direct sunlight.  Other lands leave plants sprouting from seeds carried by the wind and birds, By planting various herbs in between, it became a garden with appreciation and benefits.  Kamakura, where one of the best farms in the southern Kanto region and Sagami Bay spreads all the way to Miura a treasure trove of ingredients.  I don't have a hard time making seasonal menus every day. I'm good at watercolor sketches of the ingredients of the day The unique touch is also popular.

Today is early summer, so I chose cold soup for the first time this year.Spring-planted polone onions and new potatoes from a contracted farmer in Sekiya. I received a message that it was vichyssoise without hesitation. It is said that the weather will be cloudless all day today. No cancellation of lunch reservations. I start preparing for the usual 20 people exactly. Picking chives with the morning dew still on them. The cry of the nightingale that echoes throughout the valley of Kasai. It was as perfect as you could imagine.

It's past March this year, and the warblers have started practicing their vocalizations, it didn't sound like the beginning. one that repeats only the first "ho", there are various things that pass through all the phrases but become strangely buds.,by making it a routine every morning, it came to this beautiful voice. Well, they must have overworked their throat, today's Vichyssoise will be colder than usual,

 Come have a drink later!

 4 Hesitant croquette

This fried food specialty shop is on the road from Zaimokuza to Zushi Marina.Standing cozy in the place where you entered the path beside the liquor store,There is always a flyer through the glass facing the path.I was storing bubbling bubbles.Pork cutlet, croquette, menchi, ham cutlet...Familiar all-star pops out of the foam with a brown color. It has a fragrant scent. If I buy croquettes here,I bought a can of beer at the liquor store on the corner and headed for Zaimokuza beach. In the summer when the sun is long, you can make it in time for sunset even on my way home from work. This sunset evening drink "Hama Beer" at a pace of about once every two daysenjoy. It's not just me, but similar silhouettes line the beach here and there. As a rule of thumb, everyone keeps deep-fried food close to their skin and bites it from the bag one bite at a time, so it's perfect to prevent black kites from overhead snatching.

When the sun sets over Inamuragasaki and it gets dark,as we had agreed, the evening drink is over and we head home in the afternoon. From Zaimokuza beach through a tunnel under Route 134,I see a face I haven't seen in a long time.

"Oh, Inada-san, I've been neglecting you for a long time. You came, was it beach beer after all? ”

"I wonder how many years it's been since I came here.It reminds me of the old days for a moment."

"Did you forget something?"

"Everything"

I want to hear more about it because it's a content that I can't ignore,

Returning through the tunnel once again to the concrete ridge protruding onto the beach, sit down side by side.

"It's embarrassing, but I thought I saw your face, so I started talking to you, but I actually forgot your name.I think I hit my head when I had a stroke last winter. My life was saved, but a lot of things have disappeared from my memory."

"Is that so... I'm Sakata.I used to go to Inada's calligraphy class. Thanks to you, even after retirement from the company, at Jomyoji,I write a goshuin-cho."

"Oh, did I do a calligraphy class? Lately I've gotten to the point where I can't even write."

"Would you like to write it down?"

The characters written at the temple are always the same, so don't get stuck.

When there are few visitors, use the brush pen I carry around.I try to write various characters.

"This is the only paper I have."

Take out one sheet from the cylinder where several sheets of Japanese paper are rolled up.I brushed the sand off the concrete by hand and weighed the paper with a stone.

"I'm holding on to it for a long time."

Mr. Inada took off the cap of his medium brush pen and said, with the same brush strokes as at that time, he put the first stroke on the paper.Completely different from what I expected, the number of strokes piles up with the momentum of protruding from the paper. At the point where the original white space of the half paper is almost gone, the pen stopped. It was a wonderful two-letter word, “躊躇(hesitation).”

Mr. Inada left a letter saying that he was tired.

After the autumnal equinox, the days get shorter day by day.By the time we reach Zaimokuza Beach in November, it's already pitch black. Meanwhile, the glass of the flyer at the end of the path,it lights up brightly. When I cut my bike handle into the path like a moth attracted.Even though that fragrance tickles my nostrils and it's cold,I decided to stick to beach croquettes. I bought two croquettes and a cup of sake from the thermos at the liquor store and went to the beach. There are few human figures, only late dog walkers.I sit on the concrete embankment where I talked with Mr. Inada that day.My butt is cold but there is no wind so I can handle it.

Before it cools down, open the seal of the cup and take a sip.I warms up somehow.A few days after talking with Mr. Inada,He went to where the calligraphy class used to be,It felt like it had been abandoned on vacant land. There was an old man in the neighbor's garden, so I asked him,Certainly Mr. Inada was doing a calligraphy class,More than 10 years ago, an ambulance came and picked up Mr. Inada. The house was left empty, one day, it is said that the contractor has cleared the land and left it as it is.

Was it the first Zaimokuza beach in years since I had moved somewhere? "Or..."      I took out the paper cylinder I always carry around with me from my backpack.Looking back at Mr. Inada's calligraphy, it is still the same as that day. However, the letters that I reflexively wrote with my own handwriting without memory,I was also worried that it had become these two characters, which are more difficult to understand. At that time, I felt a faint heat on my stomach,I remembered that he had bought croquettes.Don't worry about black kites that can't see at night,However, I bite into it without taking it out of the bag so as not to expose it to the cold and cool it down. That day will be revived. I was worried about my handwriting,He regretted not asking why he had written the two letters.Mr. Inada, who had no memory of it, but made his way to the beach, there must have been some reason for him to hesitate. But it's already a labyrinth. Unlike in summer, the number of cars on the route134 that runs along the coast is reduced, and the number of stars visible above the sea increases in inverse proportion to that.To be precise, in addition to the stars, artificial satellites that shine conspicuously,And then there are the lights of the military planes that come and go between the bases in Kanagawa.

"I'm sure Inada-san in this light is here like this,I wonder if he called me..."

Since one cup was empty, I raised my hips, wipe off the sand from the concrete with your hands, spread out the paper like that day, another croquette was placed on top of it.

 5 Azalea Inn

If it is the hydrangea that colors the rainy season, then the azalea adds color to Kamakura after the cherry blossoms. Even Saeko had no objections. She somehow managed to rent this old private house in Omachi, but it is so open that even sitting on the sunny porch makes her uncomfortable. A good percentage of passersby look at this old private house. Eventually, she would like many people to enjoy this space, but she cannot allow this restlessness with her values. After living such a frustrating life, she took action to solve this vision problem after a year. She still need a blindfold. But a metal or concrete fence is not an option. Black charred cedar boards, bamboo branches, or rather, hedges that allow they to feel the four seasons and that passers-by can enjoy are good. She also want to make it as gorgeous as possible. Kamakura is a treasure trove of hedges. She traveled around the city for a while and witnessed the claims of various houses, such as masaki, witch hazel, boxwood, conifer, and sasanqua. The kanji character for azalea was chosen because it makes people stop walking unintentionally.

By the way, if she arrange it on a slope and plant it like a wall like Anyoin-temple, she can build a wall of azaleas that is pleasing to the eye, but this old private house does not have such a slope, so she have to stretch it higher than the eyes of passers-by. It seems that it will give the impression that it has grown considerably. Saeko piled up the soil, planted azaleas on it, and covered the soil with moss. In addition, this strategy was successful, and the alleys of Kamakura were complemented, resulting in the Kamakura Landscape Award. Most tourists in Kamakura go home on the same day. If you take the train, get off at Kita-Kamakura and follow the route from Engakuji Temple to Kenchoji Temple to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, and it will be around lunch time. How will you spend your afternoon?  you usually head to Hase Daibutsu and take the Enoden back from Kamakura or Fujisawa. Very few people visit Omachi for sightseeing. This is a town where most of the locals live. However, this old private house surrounded by azaleas was different. Here you can find the calmness of the ancient capital, which is the image of Kamakura that people have, the atmosphere of the great writers, and the slow time with the scent of the sea. When Saeko started the cafe, her comfort level became popular, and repeat customers began to come for the purpose of spending time here, saying that she had found her place. Most of them are single customers. A woman reading a paperback with her legs dangling from her porch. She is a young man who just typed something into her laptop. An elderly man lying on a tatami mat and looking at the sky above the hedge with his elbow pillow. He spends his time here as if it were his own home. Saeko was thinking about her new conception, thinking that she wouldn't mind supporting these kind of freeloads.

She said, "Kamakura isn't the only day trip sightseeing spot. Please spend more time there."

Involved her neighborhood friend Akane and started her accommodation. Cherry blossom tunnel in Highland, azaleas at Anyoin-temple and this inn, hydrangeas at Meigetsuin-temple and other places, fireflies dancing dimly in the Nameri River and its tributaries, the sound of leaves in the bamboo grove at Hokokuji-temple, the autumn leaves of Shishimai-valley with ginkgo and maple trees, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu-shrine If you put yourself in the peonies of Genji Pond and the Kamakura Biotope, which has a radius of several kilometers, you will become more aware of the flora and fauna of nature, and become familiar with the sky and the universe. The presence of the sea is undoubtedly what makes this land, just an hour away from Tokyo, so special. In the feng shui of the Kamakura shogunate, this sea, which is located in Suzaku, gives the city a cycle of waves. On days of big waves, the city rises. The wind from the far Pacific Ocean strikes the surface of the water, passing the baton for many kilometers and bringing big waves to Yuigahama. On a bright moonlit night, when the reflected light from the sea stretches a gold carpet toward you, a world-scale stage is staged on the normally calm Yuigahama Beach. The lighting, sound, and performers are all genuinely from the natural world. Those who witness this night for the first time are riveted for a while. Then the next morning. Through the night, the broken droplets of the waves linger in the air, moistening it. The dry air is refreshing and feels good, but the feeling of something moist touching your skin reminds you that your body is also made up of moisture inside and outside your cells. The thought comes to the fact that the moisture is maintained and established by being in the water. The atoms that make up the cells, and the elementary particles that make up the cells, are the origin of the universe in the first place. Morning beach yogis and yoginis may find it easier to explore the Upanishads. On nights when there was no performance in the natural world, Saeko held a performance. The shamisen, the sanshin, the ukulele, the bongos, the kokyu, and the shakuhachi were all perfect for the vibrations of the Kamakura night.

The reputation became popular, and in addition to Saeko's guests, residents and tourists from the Shonan area came to see it. rice field. Gamelan is an ensemble that uses many large and small keyboard percussion instruments made from metals such as iron, copper, and tin, as well as bamboo, a natural material. That's it. As expected, Saeko's inn was too cramped, and Zaimokuza's Zen temple decided to free up the precincts. In Bali, we do it with about 20 people, but we narrowed it down and decided to have the minimum of 3 people do it. Even though it's late summer, Kamakura's evenings are still hot, but the three people from Bali look cool as they adjust the musical instruments lined up on the grounds of the temple grounds. Before the sunset, the audience gathered one after another with fans in one hand,

Sit in a circle to surround the gamelan corps. Saeko, Akane, and their neighbors, who asked for help, set up oil lamps here and there, following Bali's example. Zen temples are just like Ubud temples.

"It's summer, isn't it? It's almost sunset, it's finally starting."

A gong signaled the beginning as flames lifted people and trees.

New tones and rhythms are carved into this Zen temple, which is usually made up of bells and wooden fish. There is no rule in the pursuit of the root, and there is no method in the process. Both the lingering sound of a single hit and the wave motion of a series of hits stimulate the consciousness of the universe beyond. When she close her eyes, she is  no longer in Kamakura or on earth, but beyond herself, in Brahma, where the roots surround her. Consciousness travels through dimensions as the performance progresses. When the sound fades and the eyes open, a new night in Kamakura begins.

 6 Wakae Island lyric

From a distant country yet unseen

A floating boat

When I unraveled my hometown moyai
Body and mind turned into floating weeds on the ocean
"Pick me up"
When the pestering little sister melts into the cape
A plover landed on the bow

Nights of Scorching Exhaustion
The faint light will soon draw closer
Duckweed is carried to the creek
A dock made of cobblestone
A series of iraka(roofs) and temple bells make my heart tremble

When I made up my mind in my hometown
My hometown turned into a pattern on a map
"Watch your body"
My mother, who repeats only that, made her hold
I left a little change on the table

Even if I change to a Mahayana robe
The path to the root remains the same
just go there
believe so

Towards a distant dream that has yet to reach
Crawl and drag my own body
